Govt. will provide optimum benefits for people - President

Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa reiterates that his Government is fully committed to reap the optimum benefits for the country and its people.

“The Government is the strongest ever in Parliament in the country’s history,” the President said.

“We hold the great responsibility of implementing the franchise of the people. We will implement them in sequence. We have succeeded in building-up a strong Parliament and a strong government, after a long time”, the President said.

President Rajapaksa made these observations at the meeting he had with the SLFP party organisers, at Temple Trees on Tuesday.

The present political situation in the country, an exchange of views on the proposals forwarded by the SLFP recently, May Day affairs and the government development programmes had also been taken up for discussion at the meeting.

President Rajapaksa said that the whole Eastern part of the country was brought under the control of the government for the first time since 1977 with the minimum loss of life to the civilian polity and the Armed Forces. This was a great achievement on the part of the valiant Security Forces.

He further said that his Government was providing the essential requirements and the necessary infrastructural facilities for the people who were freed from the clutches of LTTE terrorism. The provision of electricity, health services, roads, and housing was now nearing completion.

An environment in which the people of the North and East could engage in their normal livelihoods was being created. In this scenario, the President asked why the Opposition was engaged in a mud-slinging exercise with baseless allegations, only to discredit the Government and gain political mileage.

“This will not be of any benefit to the people. However, instead of replying to these unfounded allegations, we will be committed to fulfill our obligations to the people”, he added.
