Charity luncheon in aid of Cancer Early Detection Centre
COLOMBO: The Rotary Club of Colombo, in cooperation with the Health
Ministry will build and equip a complete, modern facility for early
detection of cancer and gift this to the people of Sri Lanka.
This will be the first facility of its kind, offering screening and
early detection facilities and awareness and education on prevention, to
the public entirely free of charge.
It is certain that this facility will have the capability to save
thousands of lives every year, as studies indicate that at least 1/3rd
of cases could be prevented with early detection.
The very high mortality rate is primarily due to the fact that the
disease is detected only at a late stage. The main reason for this, is
the absence of a dedicated national facility for early detection of
cancer.
It is well-known for instance, that breast and cervical cancer can be
detected well before malignancy sets in and the disease can be prevented
totally.
Our Consultants, Design Consortium Limited, have informed us that the
building will cost approximately Rs. 35 m.Part of this amount has
already been collected.
In view of construction already being under way, the balance funding
has now become an urgent necessity and a Charity luncheon has been
planned for the last week in March to raise funds for the Project. We
expect the event to be graced by the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa who
has very kindly agreed to be the Patron for the Project.
