CRICKET: The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga
yesterday announced that the annual general meeting of Sri Lanka Cricket
will be held this month thus ending months of intriguing controversy.
The Minister said that he has given directions to hold new elections
during the last week of June and the exact dates for the accepting and
closing of the nominations will be announced shortly. The Minister said
that the present Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket which has been
in existence for more than one year has performed their task to
satisfaction and have also set the atmosphere for a fair and free
election.
The present Interim Committee is headed by Jayantha Dharmadasa
(Chairman), Adel Hashim (secretary), Sujeewa Rajapaksa (treasurer),
Damien Fernando (member), K. Mathivanan (member) and Prakash Schaffter
(member). The Minister said that there were seven interim committees at
the beginning but they have now held elections in five of them and the
new elections for cricket and kabaddi will be held shortly.
He said that there were allegedly several financial mismanagements in
the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket but now the Interim Committee
has resolved everything and laid the platform for a democratic election.
The Minister hoped that the new office-bearers who will be elected at
the annual general meeting this month will continue to perform their
role quite successfully and work together for the development of the
game in this country.
The Minister said that the present Interim Committee had launched a
series of development programmes during the last few months and with
their excellent infrastructure.
They have set a good example and the results could be achieved in the
next couple of years. |
