Schoolgirl Lahiruni equals SL record
Schoolgirl Lahiruni Peiris equalled a Sri Lanka record on the opening
day of the first National Athletic Selection trial begun at Sugathadasa
Stadium yesterday.
Representing Devi Balika Vidyalaya, teenager Peiris equalled Sri
Lanka record for women's high jump. She cleared 1.75m to equal the Sri
Lanka record jointly held by Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sriyani
Kulawansa (in 1991) and C.K.P. Maduwanthi (in 1985). Incidentally, both
Kulawansa and Maduwanthi were from Kurunegala District.
The 1998 Bangkok Asian Games women's 200m gold medallist, Damayanthi
Darsha returned to her former pet event to win in 24.20 seconds.
The two-day meet, conducted by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka,
will be continued from 8 a.m. today.
