Many former stalwarts were altogether overlooked while new entrants were allocated as much as three subjects causing much displeasure and heartburn among seniors. As if that was not enough those elected as shadow Ministers refused to accept the subjects allocated to them and demanded other "portfolios." Chief among them was former PA minister turned UNP strongman S. B. Dissanayake who turned down the Posts and Telecommunication subject and demanded Samurdhi of which he was the former Minister. Angry words seemed to be exchanged between him and Chief opposition whip Mahinda Samarasinghe over the matter. Colombo District MP and confidante of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had also been irked by the allocation of a Ministry which according to him was to downgrade his status and even threatened to resign from posts he held in the party. Amidst the chaos party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was forced to abandon the plan. |
