They were released after producing them before the LTTE courts at Sampur on Rs. 100,000 bail and a personal bail each. Tricomalee LTTE political wing leader Elilen had paid a Rs. 200,000 cash bail for the two homeguards while two persons were produced as two personal bails by the LTTE.

Elilen had accompanied Trincomalee SLMM chief and his team, red cross officials and the two homeguards wives to the Sampur LTTE courts.

The two home guards were handed over to SLMM and red cross officials by Elilen and were later brought to the Trincomalee Navy camp.

SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Presidential Secretary W.J.S. Karunaratne and Public Security, Law and Order Ministry Secretary Tilak Ranaviraja were in Trincomalee to receive the two home guards.

A simple ceremony was held at the Navy camp for the home guards. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga wished them well over the phone and asked them to do their duty without fear or favour. She had told them the government would help them to build their houses.

The Minister and Secretaries made brief speeches. Later, the two home guards were handed over to their wives, parents and close relatives and North - East Sinhala Association members who were on a fast at the Trincomalee clock town for their release.

North - East Sinhala Association Tricomalee district Secretary Bandara claimed that the government's involvement was not enough in the effort to get the two released but what helped their release were hartals and protests by the Association headed by the Association's Chief patron Dehiowita Piyatissa Thera.

The Homeguards were due to leave for Gomarankadawala yesterday.
