by Rajmi Manatunga Transport Minister Felix Perera has decided to re-establish the Central Transport Board (CTB) to upgrade the loss making state bus sector. During a recent discussion with the Bus Commuters' Association the Minister said if the state bus sector is to be taken out of its present unsatisfactory situation, the CTB should be re-established. The CTB set up in 1958 is now a de-centralised service carried out by 13 cluster bus companies islandwide. According to CTB sources, the service in recent times recorded a monthly loss of Rs 24.9 million owing to maladministration and large scale financial malpractices in cluster companies which are major causes of the loss making service. "Although the Treasury allocates Rs 120 million each month for the CTB, the daily earnings of the Board have gone down drastically due to the increasing amount of expenditure," he said. The CTB with its cluster companies have around 40,000 employees and the payment of their salaries and allowances take up the bulk of the Treasury funds allocated for the service. |
