The Asia Pacific Regional Meeting of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), an international conference on 'Regional Separatism and Terrorism' was held in Colombo recently. At the conference organised by the Socialist Students' Union of Sri Lanka a large number of foriegn delegates attached to the WFDY discussed the impact of globalisation on developing countries and the responsibility of the youth in eradicating regional separatism and terrorism. Agriculture, Livestock, Irrigation and Land Deputy Minister Bimal Ratnayake delivering the key-note address at the conference said that Sri Lanka has become a country depending on international debts due to wrong economic policies practised for years. "Today we are in an insolvent position to demand money even to cover the loan interests and instalments. Every crucial economic point in the country is privatised and state involvement in the economy is minimum," he said. During the conference, issues like the destruction of national assets, privatisation of welfare services like education and health, recent trends in terrorism and the responsibility of promoting national industries and national economic means were highlighted. |
