Voice traffic via Indo-Sri Lanka micro wave link

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) inaugurated voice traffic between Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and SLT via the Indo-Sri Lanka micro wave link.

This link was a result of an agreement between SLT and BSNL of India on October 3, 2003.

It was established between Talaimannar and Rameshwaram to handle regional traffic and make Sri Lanka a business hub in South Asia, a press release from the Indian High Commission said.

Utilising this link, SLT will be able to offer good rates (traffic based or leased based or both) for Indian telecommunication traffic generated by BSNL aimed at global locations.

BSNL and SLT have also agreed to initiate the construction of a submarine cable between India and Sri Lanka and a memorandum of understanding was signed in August 2004.

This will cater to the voice and data requirements between the two countries; and even within SAARC countries.

The cable will increase BSNL's connectivity and would create substantial amount of bandwidth. In an era when SLT is taking rapid strides in development of telecommunications in Sri Lanka, strategic alignments such as this will reinforce its position as an industry leader.

BSNL is the world's seventh largest telecommunications company, and has a customer base of over 43 million for fixed telephony and six million for cellular subscribers.

Its responsibilities include improvement of India's already impeccable quality of telecom services, expansion of telecom network, introduction of new telecom services in all villages and instilling confidence amongst its customers.
