Deng Xiaoping's daughter here to promote people to people contact

Mrs. Xiao Rong, the daughter of the late Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiaoping and the Vice Chairperson of the Chinese Association for International Friendly Contact (CAIFC) accompanied by three others are now in Sri Lanka.

She is here to promote people to people contact between China and friendly countries abroad paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse.

Rong, nicknamed Maomao born as the 4th child of Xiaoping family in Chongqing City, Southwest China, was educated at the Girls' Middle School attached to the Beijing Normal University.

After her graduation she went to work in a rural village in the Northwest China, Shaenxi Province and later joined the Beijing Medical College (present Medical School of Peking University) and graduated in Medicine.

For four years in the early 1980s she worked as the Third Secretary in the Consulate Section of the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC and on her return joined the Research Office of the General Office of the National People's Congress. Being appointed as its Deputy Director, she continued her research work in the legislation and legislative systems.

She has held several positions in various organisations both political and social involving women and one time she was a deputy to the 8th National People's Congress and an Executive Member of the 6th All-China Women's Federation. She is also a member of the Chinese Writers' Association and has several articles in newspapers, magazines and books published to her credit.

Her biography "My Father Deng Xiaoping" published in 1993 has been translated in to Japanese, Russian, English, French,Korean, Thai and Dutch. Her latest "Deng Xiaoping and the Cultural Revolution" which rolled off the press in Chinese, in 2000, has been translated into Korean and published in South Korea. It is now being translated into Russian and Japanese and will come on book-stores later this year.
