Children turn BMICH lawn into butterfly paradise

by Rajmi Manatunga

The BMICH lawn was turned into a veritable butterfly paradise yesterday with the vast greenery teeming with frolicking young ones enjoying the 'Butterfly Carnival' organised under the theme 'Celebrating Childhood'.

Every nook and corner of the BMICH bore scenes of activity with children accompanied by their elders lapping up every moment of fun and entertainment.

The happy faces of children riding on merry-go-rounds, watching their favourite cartoon characters live in concert, singing and dancing could be seen everywhere.

The event was organised by the Information and Media Ministry in Collaboration with the Presidential Secretariat, Education ministry and Ports and Aviation Ministry.

Posoni Kausandya, a little girl watching a cartoon show seated on her father's shoulders told us she came from Dehiwala for the Butterfly Carnival after seeing it on TV.

"That is my favourite cartoon," she cried pointing at a performance by the 'Dostara Honda Hitha' characters.

Umesh, a year seven student had come all the way from Panadura to take part in the activities at the Butterfly Carnival. Book exhibitions and other events of an educational value were his favourites.

"We visited the museum, the Lakhanda radio station, Rupavahini and then the book shops," he said.

"I came here with my Amma and Aiya in the morning. We played and ate ice cream," little Dehemi said clutching to her mother who told us that they have been waiting for fifteen minutes to get the kids on to the merry-go-round which was full of jovial kids.

The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL), ITN and SLBC are the media sponsors of the event.
