A high ranking Army official told the Daily News yesterday that the Army Headquarters was awaiting the formal receipt of the Court documents to take action to suspend the services of Colonel Sumedha Perera following his indictment before the Colombo High Court for alleged aiding and abett. Last week Col.Sumedha Perera was indicted along with Bandula Wijesinghe, former Secretary of the Sri Lanka Bar Association and Sarath Wijewardena, the caretaker of the property, for the alleged fraudulent claim of the ancestral home owned by the philanthropist Donald Obeysekera, the First Kotte Mayor. Lawyer Wijesinghe has been charged for preparing a forged deed of gift on or around June 11,2001 for the land located at Rajagiriya which the Archaeological Department has declared as a protected property in 1992. Meanwhile Major General Sisira Wijesuriya, the former Director General of General Staff in the Army was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Kusala Sarojini Wijewardena by the officials of the Permanent Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption after investigating into his assets on the ground that he was unable to account for Rs.1.9 million. He was released on bail when he pleaded not guilty to the charges framed against him. Major General Wijesuriya is due to go on retirement on February 2, next year and was moved to Headquarters relieving him of his official duties. The media reported that a letter has been sent to the President as Minister of Defence seeking sanction to suspend Wijesuriya from service, an administrative requirement under such circumstances. The Attorney General Department has advised that regulations warranted suspension. |
