President has special discussion with Asgiriya, Malwatte Prelates

by Asela Kuruluwansa

On the invitation of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the Malwatte Chapter Mahanayaka Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera and the Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayaka Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera met the President at the President's House, Kandy, on Saturday, October 16, for a special discussion.

After chanting "seth pirith" to bless the President, the two Maha Nayaka Theras participated in a discussion with her and brought to her notice several instances of inconvenience experienced by them on the occasions of visiting historical religious places in their capacity as the custodians of such places.

They told the President that this situation arose after these historical places of worship were placed under the control of the Archaeological Department and that on one occasion the Asgiriya Chapter Maha Nayaka Thera had to buy a ticket to gain entrance to the Polonnaruwa Atamasthana.

They further cited the circumstances Ven. Pahamune Sumangala Thera underwent at the Somawathie Cetiya sacred area as examples of disrespect to the Maha Sangha at the hands of the Archaeological authorities.
