Five world leaders were invited by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to his table at the dinner he hosted for heads of delegations last week at the UN Headquarters. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and US President George W. Bush were among them.

The inauguration of the National Advisory Council on Peace and Reconciliation (NAC) will be convened by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on October 4. All political parties represented in Parliament, religious dignitaries and cross sections of Civil Society have been invited to participate, the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday.

Forged IDs: One suspect re-remanded

Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena yesterday refused an application for bail in respect of Nina Mohamed Izudeen alias 'Master' of Maradana, fifth suspect in the issuing of forged national identity cards to the woman LTTE suicide bomber and her accomplice and remanded till October 11.

Plan to prevent ex-Forces men joining underworld

The Advisory Committee on Crime will soon formulate a national policy to prevent Army deserters and those resigning from the Armed Forces joining underworld gangs, in a bid to combat the mounting crime rate. Acting Defence Minister Ratnasiri Wickremenayake told the media yesterday that the Committee which met yesterday recommended the drawing up of a long term plan to provide skills training to members of the armed forces thus facilitating their entry to a lawful occupation after service.

Agreement reached :

Bus strike called off

Agreement was reached between Transport Minister Felix Perera and private bus owners for a bus fare increase of six to seven per cent instead of the 15 per cent demanded by the latter to off set increased diesel prices. The fares will come into effect from October 1.
