Rs. 11,000 m spent annually to import milk powder:

Ministry aims to increase fresh milk consumption

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Agriculture and Livestock Ministry has reserved a Rs.95 million to popularise fresh milk consumption among the public.

The Ministry through this intends to increase the present average consumption of 35,000 litres fresh milk in the country to 70,000 litres during 2004, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the Ministry has allocated these funds to promote the consumption of fresh milk among the public and increase their nutrition levels. "Rs. 11,000 million is spent annually to import milk powder. Therefore through this move, the Ministry hopes to save this huge amount of money annually spent on import milk powder," he said.

The National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) and the MILCO Private Ltd which are under the Ministry purview have made arrangements to distribute fresh milk to the doorstep through motorcycles and threewheelers. Steps have also been taken to set up milk outlets in major cities, he said.

NLDB and MILCO have already implemented a project to provide fresh milk to consumers in Colombo and suburbs. Arrangements have been made to expand this projects to other parts shortly, he added.
