Flood relief program under way

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The flood relief program is now in progress under the direction of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena.

The department has already released Rs. 800,000 to provide cooked meals or dry rations for 3,515 flood affected families, Director Social Services Yamuna Chithrangani said.

All measures have been taken to provide immediate flood relief to Kalutara, Colombo and Gampaha districts affected by the floods.

Director, National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), N. D. Hettiarachchi said that the affected Divisional Secretariat divisions are Beruwala and Panadura in the Kalutara district, Kelaniya, Ja-Ela, Katana, Attanagalla and Wattala. NDMC has already given instructions to all District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries to be prepared for any emergency.

Meanwhile the Auto Mobile Association (AA) said that only High Level Road at Puwakpitiya had gone under water due to heavy rains but the road is clear for traffic now.

The Met Department said the sky will be cloudy over most parts of the island. Rain or thundershowers will be widespread with isolated rains over Colombo, Kalutara, Galle and Ratnapura districts.
