Forged IDs: One suspect re-remanded by Sarath Malalasekera Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena yesterday refused an application for bail in respect of Nina Mohamed Izudeen alias 'Master' of Maradana, fifth suspect in the issuing of forged national identity cards to the woman LTTE suicide bomber and her accomplice and remanded till October 11. The Judge released the four other suspects who had been remanded in connection with issuing of forged national identity cards to the woman LTTE suicide bomber who blew herself up at the Kollupitiya police station on July 7, and her accomplice. The four suspects Mohamed A. Rafideen of Maradana, K. Kularathna Fernando of Mount Lavinia, Mohamed Mubrak Mohamed Rizwan of Panadura and Indrajith Nandana Karunanayake of Veyangoda were ordered to furnish cash bail in Rs.5,000 and a bond of Rs.100,000 with two sureties each. Following the bomb blast four police personnel attached to the Kollupitiya police were killed and several others were injured. The CID yesterday told court that some of the important documents relating to issue of the forged national identity cards were missing from the Department of Registration of Persons office. Defence Counsel submitted that their clients are not involved in issuing of forged national identity cards to the suicide bomber or to her accomplice and moved court to release them on bail. The CID yesterday filing a further report before court said that the investigations into the matter is not completed and they are looking for two more suspects who are alleged to have been involved in the massive racket. The five suspects are alleged to have issued a forged national identity card to the LTTE woman suicide bomber and her accomplice, Sathyaleela Selvakumar. Sanjey Gamage, Lal Kularatne and Anton Senanayake appeared for the suspects. The CID investigations revealed that the woman suicide bomber had been brought to Colombo by several men who are members of the LTTE to assassinate EPDP leader Douglas Devananda. Investigations directed by CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke and conducted by Senior SP D.S.Y. Samaratunge revealed that several employees at the NIC office are alleged to have been involved in the issuing of forged identity cards at exorbitant prices. |
