News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | NEMEC calls for stop to misuse of state property for electioneering The National Election Monitoring and Evaluation Centre (NEMEC) has forwarded a suggestion to the Inspector General of Police, the Elections Commissioner, Secretary, Ministry of Defence and the Chairman of the Police Commission to prevent the misuse of State property for election campaigns, stated a media announcement by the NEMEC Coordinating Secretary Amarananda Weerasinghe, yesterday. The proposal titled "Misuse of State Property" urged these authorities to take steps to empower the Officers in Charge of each police station in the island to inspect vehicles engaged in electioneering activities in the respective police areas and any vehicle revealed to be a State property to take such vehicle into immediate custody and not to release such vehicles without a written recommendation by the Elections Commissioner and to prepare a report in respect of each person responsible for such misuse and to take appropriate action against such individuals. The NEMEC media announcement further stated that since the Nomination Day up to 6.00 a.m. of March 15, a large number of instances regarding the misuse of State property have been received in their Centre and that the Ministries of Sports, Rural Development, Water Management, Plantation Industries, Agricultural Industries, Fisheries and Trade and institutions of Foreign Employment Bureau, Lake House, Ports Authority, Mahaweli Authority, Western Provincial Council, Southern Provincial Council and Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha are conspicuous among the institutions against which complaints on misuse of State property have been received. |
