According to the Police Election Secretariat they had received 433 complaints of Violation of Election Offences and 104 complaints of Violation of Election Laws up to yesterday. The UNP had made 136 complaints, PA 25, JVP 64, UPFA 178 and other parties 134. Most complaints regard death threats, use of criminal force and abuse, the election secretariat said. The highest number of incidents have been reported from Ampara numbering 40. Ratnapura 37, Anuradhapura 36, Negombo 22, Matale 19, Monaragala 19, and Chilaw 18. Incidents have also been reported from the Batticaloa District, Mawanella, Ampara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Matale, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Gampaha, Kadawatha, Nugegoda and Chilaw police areas. Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has directed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to obtain assistance as and when required from the three Armed Forces. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne oversees the Violation of Election Laws unit while DIG Gamini Navaratne is in charge of the Unit on Election Offences. DIG Wickremaratne said public assistance and cooperation during the election period are very important. The public can contact the nearest police station and provide information about trouble makers in the area. |
