News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | President orders IGP to seize Ports vehicles used by Rauf Hakeem for election campaign The President has informed the Inspector General of Police, Indra de Silva that Ports Development Minister Rauf Hakeem is using a number of vehicles belonging to the Ports Authority for his election campaign in the Ampara District. In a letter dated 16.03.2004, the President has directed the I.G.P. to seize those vehicles immediately and take necessary action. She also has stated that many complaints had been received stating that there are some more U.N.P. candidates abusing such State property. Although the names of candidates using such vehicles and the relevant numbers were furnished to the I.G.P. weeks ago, no action has been taken up to date, the President stated. She wants these vehicles to be given over to the respective ministries. It has been reported that vehicle No. 65-0982 robbed from the Ministry of Plantation Industry too has been used for election campaign. It has been revealed that this vehicle is presently being used by former police officer, Mr. Kulasiri Udugampola who is on compulsory leave due to his involvement in the Millennium City raid. The President directed the I.G.P. to report within 48 hours regarding the action taken in this respect. In a separate letter addressed to the Chairman, Police Commission, Mr. Ranjith Abeysuriya, with a copy of the letter to the I.G.P. she has requested him to take necessary action and avert this very unsatisfactory situation by instructing the police to perform their duty correctly to assure free and fair election. A copy of this letter has been sent to the Commissioner of Elections. Mr. Dayananda Dissanayake for necessary action. |
