by Manjula Fernando Nearly a thousand teachers gathered opposite the Vihara Maha Devi Park's golden Buddha statue yesterday to stage a peaceful 'Sathyakriyawa' to urge the next Government to give priority to rectify their long standing grievances. Solutions instead of deceptions, they requested from the education authorities of the next Government and urged that four key long standing grievances including the B.C. Perera salary anomalies issue, discrimination towards trainee teachers and preferred promotions to class one be rectified without giving deceptive promises. After reading out a message seeking the blessings of the triple gem the teachers who were representing the eight provinces including the north and east commenced the sathyakriyawa opposite the Buddha statue around 11.00 am. Subsequently, they marched to the Park's open air theatre in a procession. The President of the Education Professionals Association Ven. Muruttettuwe Ananda Thera said "the effort was not a political campaign meant to topple or embarrass the caretaker government." "Teachers are the guiding stars of a nation. We cannot be satisfied that our teachers have been given proper recognition. The whole sector is completely politicised. This demoralising state of affairs has to be changed and today's peaceful endeavour is to convey that message," he said. |
