Global cooperation needed to combat int'l terrorism - Jayantha Dhanapala

by Anjana Gamage

"There must be co-operation from all parts of the world to combat international terrorism, which still continue over a period of time, said Sri Lanka's representative to the United Nations Jayantha Dhanapala, participating as the chief guest at the tenth awards ceremony of the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) held at the BMICH committee room A.

He said that the 10th ceremony was a milestone of the BIDTI institute and courses such as international relations were designed to train and produce talented diplomats to the civil society, where the foreign service today was growing from strength to strength.

He said at present three international commissions have been set up by the UN charter including military and political security and Secretary General's High Level panel to meet the challenges and the concepts of the collective global security.

"We have to consider the economic and social security as well. There are limits to space sovereignty. The concept of collective security is justified by the international community. The World has become highly integrated politically and socially", he said.

"As the members of the civil society we should oblige the high level panel. The UN is shaping according to the challenges of the time. The UN as an institute established from the ashes of the second world war, will soon look for the better achievements politically, economically, socially and security", he said.

Considering the state of the world living standard, he stressed that 1.3 billion people were living today with 1 US dollar per day and about 3 billion with 2 dollars per day."

We have to strive harder to achieve Millennium Development Goal (MDG) which was focused at the UN General Assembly and the answer to reach that level is multilaterlism", he said.

Director General of the BIDTI, Dr. Vernon L.B. Mendis speaking on the occasion said the courses have become much popular among the public during the past ten years.

"The role of the BIDTI is to guide and conduct its studies of the international scene for the benefit of its participants. Sri Lanka has reason to be proud of its achievements in the diplomatic sphere which have won recognition in the international scene," he said.

Ambassador to the United States of America Jeffrey Lunstead also spoke.

Over 300 participants received certificates for their respective courses in General Courses 16 and 17, United Nations and its Future and Sri Lankan Studies conducted by the institute. The Vote of thanks was made by the Director of the BIDTI Dr. Lorna Dewaraja and several representatives of the respective courses Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, Ayesha Zubair, M.M. Zuhair and Sewandi Wickremasinghe also participated.
