Chairman Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Harim Peiris says that the SLRC has at no time acted in contravention of the guidelines issued by the Elections Commissioner in its election broadcasts. Replying to a letter sent to him by UNP General Secretary Senarath Kapukotuwa, the SLRC Chairman cautions Kapukotuwa to desist from any illegal and unconstitutional actions saying that the mini teledramas as referred to by Kapukotuwa were paid commercials which are also carried on private television channels. In his letter to Kapukotuwa, Peiris states: "I received your letter of 12th March, 2004 Ref. A/GE/Me/2004/03 and was surprised at its contents and frankly rather disappointed by its tone. I had expected even a modicum of decency and professionalism to emanate from you but clearly that was expecting too much. As you are well aware, the mini teledramas as you call them are paid commercials, which are also carried on the private television channels and are not produced by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC). Moreover the SLRC has at no time acted in contravention of the guidelines issued by the Commissioner of Elections, despite the hysterical claims to the contrary by you and the private media associated with your party and its leader. Thus your stated intent to hold me personally responsible for the telecasts and to recover the costs of production and airtime from me is baseless and unfounded. Finally, with regard to the intentions of a future UNF Government, I would only caution and advise you to desist from any illegal and unconstitutional actions, as attempted by the present UNF Government vide the failed 18th Amendment, the 19th Amendment and the Defence Gazettes among others." |
