Assn. of SMEs of tea set up

Small and medium exporters of tea set up the Association of Small and Medium Exporters of Tea (AS-MET) recently.

There are over 400 tea exporters, but only 190 have recorded trade transactions which does not reflect the actual position when evaluating export share and potential for trade development. Manthi Delwita, Chris Dassanayake, and M. C. M. Zarook the main office-bearers of the Association said that the small exporter had done his share for the Industry but was always ignored.

The objectives of AS-MET is not only to safeguard the rights and issues of the small and medium exporter of tea, but also to safeguard the interests of the tea industry in general.

AS-MET's mandate will also include monitoring tea exports for quality control to prevent scandals.

Membership will be open to exporters whose export volume does not exceed 500,000 kgs, or Rs. 100 million in fob value per calendar year. The Association is a member of the National Chamber of Commerce.

American auction for rubber

The Colombo Rubber Traders Association (CRTA) will conduct an American Auction today to raise funds for the Association for its development and future focus for action for the rubber trade. David Jansze, Consultant said that this was necessary because the rubber industry was now viable.

This auction will be conducted prior to the commencement of the weekly public rubber auctions. All those connected with the rubber trade will participate.

Ten Plantation Companies will donate 100 kilos each to make up a total of 1,000 kilos Thick Pale Crepe No. 1.

Sunil de Alwis to head Energizer Indonesia

Sunil de Alwis, Managing Director, Energizer Sri Lanka has been appointed as President Director-Energizer Indonesia. De Alwis will succeed Ron Shafter on his retirement. He is the first Sri Lankan to hold this position.

Sunil de Alwis joined Energizer Sri Lanka as Product and Advertising Manager in 1982. Thereafter he served as Sales Manager, Marketing Manager and Marketing Director handling the sales and marketing functions.

He took over as Managing Director in 1994. His experience in competing and achieving premier brand, volume and profit position in Sri Lanka with a large traditional market and fast development modern trade in a challenging economy makes him uniquely suited for his new assignment.

He is also the current President Emeritus of the American Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (AMCHAM).

Taking over from Sunil de Alwis in Sri Lanka will be Anil Gadi who serves as Managing Director - Energizer India.
