Colombo Dockyard Limited broke major ground by securing a contract to repair this giant oil exploration ship beating many international competitors for the job. MODU Sagar Vijay a drill ship purpose built for oil exploration work owned by Oil and Natural Gas Commission Mumbai arrived in Colombo on June 15 for dry docking and major lay-up repairs. This is the first time in the history of CDL that such a highly sophisticated drill ship has called in for major lay up and dry dock repairs. According to CDL, amid stiff competition from shipyards from China, Vietnam and India for bottom end ship repair technology its management was anticipating a breakthrough to enter into the top end ship repair technology through repairs of gas carriers, dredgers and drill ships. This is also the first time CDL is catering to the giant Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in India with an opportunity to enter into the top niche of ship repair works.

Army to de-list 50,000 deserters

The Sri Lanka Army will commence the de-listing of more than 50,000 of its deserters in the first week of September from the Gampaha district after launching a massive recruitment drive in August, a senior Army official told the Daily News yesterday.

US grant for development of 300 MW power plant in Lanka

Colombo, July 29 - The US Government has awarded a $560,000 grant to the Government of Sri Lanka to fund a technical assistance programme for providing consultancy services on the development of a 300 MW coal fired power plant.

CEB calls off strike

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday called off its planned islandwide strike scheduled for today after the CEB management promised to pay an advance of Rs. 15,000 of the back-dated salary arrears, a senior trade union official told the Daily News yesterday.
