Kingswood end Ananda's unbeaten run - win 32/8 by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy sports correspondent Kingswood College blasted Ananda College's unbeaten record with a rousing 32 points (3 goals, 1 try, 2 penalties) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) win to lift the group title of the Schools Milo Cup rugby tournament in a tournament match played at Randles Hill grounds, Kandy yesterday. At half-time Kingswood led 10-3. This was Kingswood's seventh successive win this season. They finished with an unbeaten record. Kingswood College revelled under wet conditions to dominate play which had the Anandians rattled. Towards the dying stages of the game flanker Tharindu Wijeratne of Ananda College was sent on 'sin bin' for dangerous play. Kingswoodians opened scoring through a penalty fired by full-back Erande Weerakoddy. This was followed by a try through scrum-half Dharshana Premaratne after fly-half Fazil Marija had done the ground work. Weerakoddy added the extra points. Anandians were able to reduce the gap through a penalty fired by fly-half Nipune Vimukthi. Almost after resumption Weerakoddy put the Kingswoodian on the victory course when he joined the three quarters to touch down mid-right and added the points himself. Kingswood 17-3. Kingswood scored their third try through fly-half Marija which went unconverted. Kingswoodians now in fine form staved off an aggressive move by the Anandians when full-back Weerakoddy kicked ahead and centre Mohamed Lufthi hacked the ball for about 50 metres to score under the post. Weerakoddy added the extra points and also fired a penalty.In the dying stages Ananda scored through scrum-half Rensith Peiris. C. Amadoru refereed. Kingswood won the junior game 17-5. |
