Pin Fernando memorial golf tourney by Richard Dwight The Royal Colombo Golf Club did well in the year of its centenary in 1979, to perpetuate the memory of legendary golfer 'Pin Fernando' by inaugurating a tournament under his name - a name which in the fifties and early sixties became synonymous with local golf here - mainly through Pin's dominating performances here and in the Asian region. Ever since 1979, through the years, this tournament has been sustained by the RCGC with assistance of sponsors. This year the 24th annual tournament, will commence on Saturday the 19th and continue on Sunday the 20th which incidentally happens to be the birth anniversary of Pin Fernando. There will be around 125 golfers taking part, and the competition will be worked off on the strokeplay format. Thirty-two players will qualify to play on the following day, Sunday at which too, the awards ceremony will take place. |
