Sportsman Nimal Lewke now DIG by Dinesh Weerawansa Former Sri Lanka national rugby coach, Nimal Lewke has been promoted Deputy Inspector General of Police by the National Police Commission. Lewke, who was a Senior Superintendent prior to his promotion, is now the Deputy Commandant of the Police Special Task Force (STF). He has been one of the highly successful rugby coaches that Sri Lanka has ever produced. A man with a proven track record in the field of rugby, DIG Lewke has guided school, club and Sri Lanka national teams with dedication and success. It was under Lewke that Kandy Sports Club went from strength to strength and competed two of their most successful seasons ever and ended as undisputed triple champions. Later, Lewke coached the Sri Lanka national rugby team with distinction and guided them to several rugby union Test wins. His busy schedules with the elite Police force STF, forced him to step down from the post of national coach a couple of years back. DIG Lewke is a Police officer par excellence, excelling in not only in the field of rugby but as one of the top commandos. Having joined Sri Lanka Police in 1984 as a Sub Inspector, he was picked to serve in the first batch when the STF was formed in 1985 and was later promoted ASP. He was promoted as an SP in 1990 and as an SSP in 1994. Lewke is one of the few officers who has an extensive knowledge and experience in VVIP guard and also served as Director of the Prime Minister's Security Division (PMSD). He has trained in the USA, Italy, Malaysia and United Kingdom in VIP protection. He has also served as Director of the Police Hospital. Despite his stepping down from the post of national rugby coach to become Deputy Commandant of the STF last year, Lewke has been associated with Sri Lanka rugby as Director/ Development of the SLRFU. His son Dushan Lewke too has been following his father's footsteps in the rugby field and excelled for Royal College. Lewke excelled for St. Sylvester's, Kandy as a ruggerite and boxer. |
