Ven. Soratha remembered

A commemorative ceremony to mark the 40th death anniversary of Venerable Welivitiye Sri Soratha Maha Thera, scholar, writer and founder Vice Chancellor of the Vidyodaya Pirivena will be held at the Sri Soratha Pirivena, Nalagasdeniya, Hikkaduwa on July 17 from 8 a.m.

Highlights will include a seminar on the theme "Viyathun Saba Meda," a Soratha memorial lecture, the launching of Venerable Soratha's biography, an exhibition of his manuscripts and articles, a book distribution among Pirivenas in Galle District and distribution of food parcels and other relief items among the needy.

The ceremony will conclude with a special performance by the State Dance Ensemble. Venerable Gammeddegoda Punnasara Thera, Viharadhipati, Totagamuwa Raja Maha Vihara will preside over the morning session while Venerable Pallatthara Sumanajoti Chief Sunghanayake Thera of Dakshina Lanka will preside over the afternoon session.

Galle District MP Jayantha Jayaweera, Professor Vinnie Vitharana, Edwin Ariyadasa, Professor Mendis Rohanadheera, Dharmasiri Gamage, Director of Cultural Affairs M. Lakshman Perera, Chairman, Sri Lanka National Book Development Board Ranjith Amarakeerthi Palihapitiya, Secretary A. B. L. Sudharma de Silva and Visharada Sudath Amarasinghe will also participate.

The ceremony is jointly organised by the Sri Lanka National Book Development Board, Department of Cultural Affairs and the Welivitiye Sri Soratha Nahimi Padanama.

She needs your help

Eight-month-old Miyuni Katugampola of 13/61, Seventh Lane, Vidarshana Mawatha, Galawilawatte, Homagama is suffering from Leukaemia and doctors at the Maharagama Cancer Institute have recommended a bone marrow transplant to save her life. Since the disease is AML-M7 type the child has to be taken overseas for treatment.

The Medical Institute, National University Hospital, Singapore has undertaken to treat the child. The treatment is estimated to cost Singapore dollars 50,000. The child's parents say they are not in a position to afford this bill and seek generous contributions from the public to help save the child's life. All contributions should be remitted to Account No. 0049-21-2040411-1 at the Bank of Ceylon, Nugegoda Branch.

Rs. 90 million for 1147 projects in Gampaha

A Decentralized budget fund of Rs. 90 million has been allocated to implement 1147 development projects in Gampaha district. This is the first phase of fund allocation for the year 2003-2004.

The 1147 development project programme was approved at the district development planing committee meeting held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya.

The committee meeting was held at the Gampaha district secretariat. Rs. 30 million was allocated for 466 development projects that are to be directly implemented by the Pradeshiya Sabha in the district.

Seventy development projects in Divulapitiya Divisional secretariat division, 44 in Katana, 58 in Negombo, 66 in Minuwangoda, 83 in Mirigama, 124 in Attanagalla, 141 in Gampaha, 63 Ja-Ela, 34 in Wattala, 167 in Mahara, 125 in Dompe, 101 in Biyagama and 57 in Kelaniya are to be implemented under the respective divisional secretariats.
