by Indeewara Thilakarathne Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara yesterday sentenced M. Don Nishanta who was found guilty of abducting and raping 16-year-old girl, to a term of 12 years rigorous imprisonment and fined a sum of Rs. 1,000. She also ordered the accused to pay a sum of Rs. 25,000 as compensation to the victim. The accused M. Don Nishanta was charged with abducting and raping a 16-year-old girl between January 23 and February 22, 2003 at Hettipola and Kalutara. At the time of the crime, the victim was 13-year-old and the accused had worked as a mason at the site of constructing a building for the Bank of Ceylon, Keselwatte Branch. The victim attended school while her blind mother stayed at home. After the incident the mother of the girl had gone to the police in Keselwatte but the police had refused to entertain her complaint for six times. Thereafter she had gone to Kalutara police where the accused resided. Later police in Kalutara had directed the case back to Keselwatte police. The accused who was found guilty of all charges was sentenced to 2 years RI for the first count abduction. In default the accused will have to serve a term of 6 months RI. For the second count of rape, a term of 10 years RI was imposed on the accused and was ordered to pay a sum of Rs. 25,000 as compensation to the victim. |
