Community development programs for displaced persons

A fully fledged Technical College for Tamil medium students will be set up in the Puttalam district. The proposal was originated by Vanni Rehabilitation Minister Noordeen Mashoor with the support of Parliamentary Affairs Minister A. H. M. Azwar, said Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabeer Hashim when he opened three Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) and the mobile VTC in Puttalam last Sunday.

He said the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), which comes under his purview and the Ministry of Vanni Rehabilitation have jointly undertaken the project for the expansion of skills development program with the ultimate aim of creating income generation opportunities for the internally displaced persons to uplift their living standard.

The two Ministers have jointly laid a foundation stone for a permanent building for a District Vocational Training Centre at Nagavillu in Puttalam.

Addressing a public rally at Mohamadiyapuram in Kalpitiya, Kabeer Hashim said that the proposed "State-of-the-Art" Technical College would be the first of its kind in the Vanni ragion and would be funded by a foreign agency. He assured that all possible assistance would be given by his Ministry for the welfare of the internally displaced persons in the area.

Minister Noordeen Mashoor said that these vocational training centers would cater to thousands of unemployed youth who are G.C.E. (O/L) qualified and school drop-outs to be given skilled training initially in out-boat motor mechanism, welding, computer training, tailoring, carpentry and masonry.

Minister Mashoor thanked the Premier on behalf of the Vanni people, particularly for his endeavour and commitment to bring about permanent peace' in order to bring all communities together to create a united Sri Lanka.

Kabeer Hashim visited various relocated villages and welfare centers in the area on the invitation of Mashoor. They participated in several community development projects including the second stage of the Revolving Credit Fund launched by the Vanni Rehabilitation Ministry for the internally displaced women with special focus on those, coming under the purview of the Vanni Rehabilitation Ministry.

They also commissioned a rural electrification scheme at Al-Manar, providing lights to four adjoining relocated villages Mandalakuda Mohamadiyapuram, Mihrajpuram and welcome camp and also opened an MPCS branch at Al-Manar and laid a foundation stone for a mosque at Mohamadiyapuram.

They also distributed over 7000 coconut seedlings, spectacles and three-wheeled chairs to selected displaced persons in the area.

Vanni Rehabilitation Ministry Secretary, R. Tharmakulasingham detailed the core-program relating to rehabilitation and re-settlement carried out by the Ministry to raise the living standards of Internally Displaced Persons in the Vanni district.
