by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

A hardcore underworld gangster known as "Kalu Thushara", a criminal in the most wanted list of the Crimes Intelligence Unit of Police with six warrants under his name was taken into custody by a special team of officers close to Maharagama yesterday. He was arrested along with another two of his seven-member gang.

"The Police also took a 9mm pistol, six live bullets, and 2kg of stolen gold jewellery worth over Rs. 3 million in his possession," DIG Crimes and Crime Intelligence, Sirisena Herath said yesterday.

The team under the direction of the DIG Crimes and Crime Intelligence hunted down Kalu Thusara and his seven member gang who were alleged to be behind several robberies including the robbery of Rs. 5.6 million from the HSBC Pelawatta branch. With Thusara, the gang leader and two others now in custody, the Police have taken all seven members of Thusara's gang into custody.

Four gangsters were netted previously, DIG said.

The DIG also said that the suspect is alleged to have committed the murders of Ashoka Bandara of Maharagama and Ravindra Indrajith of Thalawathugoda.

It is also alleged that notorious gangster had robbed Rs 10 million worth of jewellery from three shops in Moratuwa, Maharagama and Homagama.

The DIG said that the latest in a string of robberies carried out by Thusara's gang was a vehicle robbery where a Pajero Intercooler was stolen from Mt. Lavinia.

The Police are investigating to ascertain whether Kalu Thusara was a weapons dealer to underworld criminals. They plan to recover the stolen jewellery and the intercooler. The Director of Crimes and Crime Intelligence at Police Headquarters, SSP Mahinda Hettiarachi also assisted the DIG in carrying out the investigations.
