Indices return to 1,000 levels

The Colombo Bourse's indices returned to 1,000 levels yesterday buoyed by strong buying into blue chips by locals and foreigners.

Stock market analysts said that the trading was boosted following the positive political news and World Bank's announcement on reassured commitment to Sri Lanka yesterday. The ASPI jumped to 1,019.5 points from 996.9 and the Milanka index to 1,965.2 points from 1,908. The turnover was a significant Rs. 366.78 million. Among the major transactions were Asian Hotels, Caltex, Distilleries, Grain Elevators, JKH, LMF, NDB, Nations Trust and NDB Bank.

Stockbrokers said that there were significant foreign purchases into Distilleries and JKH shares. Stock brokers said that the most of the blue chips were on demand and appreciated in value as well.The NDB share value got back to 165 levels.

The top five gainers were Reefcomber, Millers, Cargills, Udapussellawa and Nestle.
