by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Health officials have stepped up vigilance in the wake of the discovery of a massive stock of counterfeit medicated plasters from a factory in Kaduwela. Acting on a tip off, Drugs Inspection Officials attached to Health Ministry detected this huge stock of counterfeit medicated plasters carrying the name of a world renowned brand. "The stock is estimated to be worth around Rs 1.3 million and the initial investigations have revealed that these counterfeit products had been distributed islandwide," an investigation official told the Daily News yesterday. Official said the original medicated plaster of this brand is manufactured in Thailand." The counterfeit products are almost similar to the original. "Only a very close look can identify the deference," he said. The detection was conducted by the drugs inspectors in association with the Police officials in the area. It was revealed that the particular factory had been operating under the pretext of manufacturing candles. Health authorities say the use of such counterfeit medical products could pose a grave threat healthwise to the public since these fake products are not manufactured under proper health conditions and are not sterile. "Such products could also produce germs and cause health hazards," he said. Further investigations are being conducted by drugs inspectors P. Madarasinghe and A. Karunatilake. |
