by Manjula Fernando Police riot squad stood on guard inside the Kelaniya university yesterday after six science faculty students attending practical tests were injured in an attack by a group of rival students. Peliyagoda Police HQI Priyalal Dassanayake said the police protection will be present until the conclusion of the examinations on July 4. A group of Science Faculty seniors who came for their practical tests were attacked by rival group members yesterday and six students who received minor injuries were rushed to the hospital for OPD treatment. On the request of the Vice Chancellor, three static guards each consisting of five police officers have now been set up in and around the university. Police will guard the two bus stands near the university and also the surrounding by-lanes on a request by the university authorities until the conclusion of the practical tests. Vice Chancellor Prof.K.Tillekeratne told the Daily News that student clashes have become a menace in the Kelaniya university and they witness a clash resulting injuries to several students at least once every few months. The police suspect that the Kelaniya University Student Union members were involved in the attack although it was not confirmed by yesterday. |
