IFNGO Conference in Colombo from Aug 11-15

The Colombo Plan is the first and the only regional inter-governmental organisation, which addresses the issue of drugs in the Asia-Pacific region.

Since the social and economic costs of drug abuse place a great strain on the member countries, both economically and socially, the Drug Advisory Programme (DAP) of the Colombo Plan was established and has been in the forefront combating the drug problem in the region, states a press release by the Colombo Plan Secretariat.

The release adds: The DAP was instrumental in initiating the formation of the International Federation of Non-Government Organisations (IFNGO), for the Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse, which plays a decisive role in coordinating all NGOs in the region to prevent substance abuse. Since its inception, the Colombo Plan DAP has been supporting the IFNGO Conferences that are held once in two years.

The 20th IFNGO Conference will be held from August 11-15 at the Colombo Plaza Hotel (Hotel Lanka Oberoi) in Colombo. The theme, "Maximizing the Potential of the Youth in Drug Demand Reduction" is a timely intervention in tackling this hideous dilemma when nations are committed in combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the region.

The Conference expects about 300 delegates from all over the world and therefore it brings forth numerous fruitful opportunities to further strengthen regional inter-relationships, networking and skills enhancement in various aspects in drug demand reduction.

With funding from the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), US Department of State, the Colombo Plan DAP will sponsor about 100 demand

reduction practitioners from member countries including 25 sponsorship places for local participants, to attend the 20th IFNGO Conference.

In this regard, DAP invites drug demand reduction practitioners who are active in the field of drug abuse prevention and treatment, particularly working in the areas related to youth sector, to send their applications to Colombo Plan DAP, for consideration of providing sponsorships.

Interested applicants may visit our Website for more details and send their applications indicating current activities of their organisations and their involvements in drug demand reduction efforts, before June 30 to the following.
