Trincomalee correspondent Ven. Mahanankadawala Piyaratana Thera, Convenor of the Association for the Protection of National Resources and Human Rights attending a workshop held in Trincomalee on 'People's response to regaining Sri Lanka and process to strengthen unity and sustainable development' said people in this country are living in a decisive period. The conflict situation is over and a peaceful situation has dawned. Though people could be happy about regaining peace, a situation has arisen that the national resources and asset to the country are being disowned by the people. Organised by the Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union, the workshop was participated by representatives of thirty different trade unions and other organisations and was held at the Vigneswara Tamil MV. Ven. Piyaratana continuing said it has been told that poverty, malnutrition and unemployment could be eliminated through globalisation. Even the present Government has obtained loans on interest from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for this purpose but according to World Bank sources these three ills have not been eradicated. Ven. Piyaratana added that unity and trust are required among the communities to improve the country. There may be powers that were trying to create displeasure among the communities. But it is very essential to bring about unity and brotherhood among the communities. President, Eastern Rehabilitation Organisation K. Sivapalan attorney-at-law said if the national resources in the country are properly utilised there will be no necessity to become indebted to other countries. Sri Lanka has become a begging nation and the people are compelled to live throughout as beggars. Referring to the Ilmenite deposit at Pulmoddai in Trincomalee district, Sivapalan said if the Ilmenite deposit could be properly exploited the income deriving from that source could cover the budget of the country annually. Deputy Secretary, Provincial Ministry of Infrastructure Development T. Thavasilingam at length described about the hazardous results of the conflict that almost ruined the North-East Province. The other speakers included Secretary, Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union T. Mahasivam and Sarath Fernando. |
