End-use appliance energy efficiency standards and labelling (S&L) programs are important policy tools to promote and encourage the use of energy efficient appliances among electricity consumers. Several Asian countries have implemented successful standards and labelling programs while others are presently developing such programs. S&L is a key activity under the USAID funded South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy (SARI/Energy) which promotes mutual beneficial energy linkages among the nations of South Asia. SARI/Energy serves as a vehicle to bring key energy sector players from both the public and private sectors and end-users across the region to address and resolve issues related to energy. Technical assistance and training provided to key stakeholder institutions in Sri Lanka, Ceylon Electricity Board, Sri Lanka Standards Institution and suppliers/manufacturers have strengthen the ongoing programs (fluorescent ballast labelling) and led to the introduction of new programs such as CFL labelling and standards for refrigerators. At the invitation the Nepal Bureau of Standard and Metrology, a three member delegation representing the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Sri Lanka Standards Institution and appliance suppliers is expected to be in Kathmandu to assist their counterpart staff at the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, the Nepal Electricity Authority and appliance suppliers in replicating Sri Lanka Ballast Labelling program in Nepal. |
