COLOMBO, June 23 (Lankapuvath) - The financial package of assistance to internally displaced families owing to the North-East war will be increased. It has been estimated that approximately 200 million US dollars is required as initial assistance for resettlement and shelter. In addition more funds will be needed for education, health and the infrastructure facilities, Office of the Commissioner General of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Work in Conflict affected areas told Lankapuvath. The Cabinet of Ministers had already approved the financial package for displaced persons. A sum of Rs. 100,000 will be provided for resettlement and shelter for each internally displaced family under the new financial package of assistance. A survey carried out jointly by Ministry of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Refugees, UNHCR and the Department of Census and Statistics revealed that the number of internally displaced families is in the region of 227,000. In addition there are several thousands of displaced persons who have left the country and taken refugee status abroad. As well as many internally displaced who are economically affected by the loss of employment like fishing and farming although they are not physically displaced. Of the total displaced families in the North and East approximately 30,000 are widows. A further 300,000 children have been affected by the war of whom 50,000 are in welfare centres. Elderly and elderly traumatized and the children living in welfare centres form a special group for resettlement and rehabilitation.
