by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Government has allocated Rs.9 billion to grant relief to Samurdhi beneficiary families this year. This allocation has been made to Samurdhi families from January to December this year, a senior Samurdhi Ministry official told the Daily News yesterday. At present the Government provides Samurdhi relief to families numbering 1,887,237 in 21 districts countrywide. Nearly Rs.730 million is spent monthly to grant Samurdhi relief. This relief has been reserved for low income families of Rs. 1,000, Rs. 600, Rs. 350 and Rs. 250 depending on the size of the family. In addition, Rs.400 each is given to the families who have been identified as Janasaviya recipients. He said the highest number of Samurdhi beneficiary families (215,770) is recorded from the Kurunegala district. The next highest number is from Gampaha (159,000), Ratnapura (145,000), Kandy (130,355) and Galle (160,306) districts. Samurdhi benefits has already been granted to 87,023 families in the Ampara district and 84,817 families in Batticaloa district. In addition families in Trincomalee (48,930) and Vavuniya (9,139) have also been given Samurdhi relief. The declaration of the ceasefire by the Government and the LTTE has opened avenues for the setting up of Samurdhi banks in the North-East to cater to the needs of a large number of needy low income families. The Government has already set up 94 Samurdhi banks in five districts in the North-East including Ampara (26), Batticaloa (28), Jaffna (18), Trincomalee (16) and Vavuniya (6), he said. |
