Dehiwela Intelligence Unit OIC shot dead inside quarters

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Dehiwela Intelligence Unit OIC IP Sunil Thabrew was shot dead yesterday in his quarters of the Dehiwela Police by a Police informant alleged to have links with the LTTE.

Barely an hour after the incident the suspect was taken into custody when he tried to swallow cyanide. The Police who identified the suspect as Madan Kumar said that he fired two shots using a 9mm automatic pistol at the IP near the left ear killing him on the spot. Thereafter the suspect had fled in a threewheeler. The quarters of the IP was a veritable slaughterhouse with blood and gore spread all over the floor.

The Mt. Lavinia ASP M. S. Wimalasena said that the alarm was raised after Dehiwela OIC P. R. Senanayeka heard two gun shots from the direction of the quarters. Immediately thereafter Police officers had seen an unidentified man sneaking behind the quarters' building and later fleeing in a threewheeler. A special team headed by SI Dharmawardena was promptly assigned to give chase after the threewheeler. On the way the Police team spotted a threewheeler with two people inside involved in a struggle.

The Police officers had then grabbed the suspect and pulled him out of the threewheeler at a location close to Dehiwela Zoo. At that instant the suspect tried to bite onto a cyanide capsule but the attempt was thwarted by police. Following the unsuccessful attempt made by the suspect, the officers admitted him, to Kalubowila Hospital. He was taken into custody shortly after some quick treatment.

ASP Wimalasena further said that the initial Police investigation had revealed that the contract had been given 10 days ago by a terrorist organisation. But Western Province South DIG, K.P.P. Pathirana refused to reveal by whom. It is also alleged that the Intelligence Unit OIC was handling the investigations into the suicide bomb blast where former Minister C. V. Gooneratne was killed.

The IP had also taken four suspects and several ammunition into custody relating to the bomb blast.

Police say that the suspect was offered a job by the IP at a aquarium centre where he (suspect) was employed.

The 9mm Chinese made automatic pistol used by the suspect in the shooting was also recovered by the Police, from a thicket near the Dehiwela Zoo.

Under the direction of Western Province (South) DIG K.P.P. Pathirana Mt. Lavinia SP W.P. Dayaratna, and ASPs M.S. Wimalasena, Roshan Silva, Ranmal Kodithuwakku the Dehiwela Police OIC P. R. Senanayake and OIC Crimes Keerthi Ratnawera are conducting further investigations.
