Ajith and Uma win two mile sea swim

K.K.V. Ajith Kumara of Dolphin Aquatic Club won the men's event for the first time while Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College retained the women's title for the second successive year at the prestigious 66th annual open two mile sea swim at the Mount Lavinia bay yesterday.

The event was sponsored by National Lotteries Board (Principal Sponsor) and Master Divers and Mount Lavinia Hotel and conducted by the National Amateur Sports Union of Sri Lanka.

Ajith with his good experience won the men's race after a close tussle at the finish. Last years third placed Ajith took the lead from the start and maintained it to the turn. He was closely followed by last year's runner-up Sampath Weerakkody. Both Ajith and Sampath swam close together until the finish but Ajith pulled it off to take the men's title. It was indeed a tight and close finish.

Ajith clocked 47.03 secs. followed by Samapth of Sri Devananda, Ambalangoda second 47.04 secs. and J.W. Ruwan Silva of Dolphin AC, last year's fifth placed in third place 48.02 secs. Duraj Rangana of Sri Devananda forth 48.04 secs. J. Kumesh Kumara of Sri Devananda fifth 48.06 secs., Dharshaka Tennakoon of Ananda College sixth 49.17 secs.

Pradeep Lahiru of Panadura AC seventh 49.20 secs. Eranga Fernando of Rainbow AC eight 49.22 secs., K.T. Janath Prasanna of Sri Devananda ninth 49.40 secs. and L. Roshan Peiris of Dharmasoka College tenth 49.51 secs. Ajith carried away the John Wilson Challenge Trophy for his fine feat.

In the women's event Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College who is selected to swim in the SAFD Games in Pakistan this month proved her class to retain the title. She won it with a time of 55.15 secs. Pushpa Chandani of Sri Devanananda came in second 56.02 secs. Imara Fahim of Elizabeth Moir International School third 56.03 secs. Thakshila Daluwatte of Sri Sumangala, Panadura fourth 1:00.23 secs. and Mandu Jayasundara of Sirimavo Bandaranaike BV fifth 1:00.54 secs.

Uma was presented the Dennis Flamer Caldera Challenge Trophy.
