Congenial environment for North-South dialogue since MOU - Minister Lokuge

by Piliyandala group correspondent

Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims are daily travelling to the North to worship the Nagadeepa temple. They are going there on their own and not on a request made by the Government. The only reason being the stoppage of war after twenty years, said Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge.

The Minister speaking at the inauguration of the water supply project at Kesbewa said that the efforts have created a congenial environment for pilgrims from the South. "It has also increased the living standard of the ordinary people in both North and South by the creation of the new improving income earring avenues which were closed during the twenty years of war the Minister said.

He said that with the peace initiative no unwanted deaths of soldiers and innocent ordinary people, and handicapped has been reduced to zero, in the South. "It was a daily occurrence one year before. Now the North and South are hundred times happier than during the war time", Lokuge said.

"There is also a resurgence in the economic situation. Foreign investors are enthusiastically eying Sri Lanka which might definitely increase employment opportunities specially for the common man. The tourists influx has gone up more than two fold, "the Minister said.
