Plans to renovate 500 tanks in H'tota district - Minister Kularatna

from M. R. M. Niyas, Hambantota special correspondent

Minister of Southern Region Development Ananda Kularatna addressing the gathering on the occasion of inauguration of renovation work of the Swarnamalee Wewa in the Hambantota DS area said that plans have been drawn to renovate 500 tanks out of 1,460 tanks in the Hambantota district during this year, with the assistance of the Government and Non Governmental Organisations.

Minister Kularatna said, the people of Hambantota district mostly farmers, request nothing but water, water for their agricultural activities. Ruhuna once the main area of supplying rice for the country is compelled to starve owing to short-sighted policies. We have to give permanent solutions for the grievances of the farmers. The main problem which is water for their agricultural activities would be overcome through renovation of tanks in the district.

He said, the people who do not like the progress of the people of the Hambantota district are making every effort to curtail the port construction work, but our effort is genuine. The feasibility study reports would be handed over to the Ministry of Port Development as scheduled.

Minister Kularatna said that he was happy as the national and international philanthropists had come to assist the tank renovation projects in the Hambantota district.

GA, Hambantota district Ananda Amarathunga said, it is better to help renovate tanks in the Hambantota district rather than providing dry rations as a temporary measure to overcome the problem. International Red Cross Society has shown their willingness to assist in the renovation activities.

Secretary Swarnamalee Wewa Farmers' Organisation S. Santhipala delivered the welcome speech.
