Livestock Board given Rs. 27 million for milk production

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) will provide over Rs. 27 million worth milching and agricultural equipment to NLDB farms to increase their dairy production, animal husbandry and agricultural activities.

On a directive of Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake, Rs.27 million has been granted to the NLDB from Ministry allocations to provide agricultural and milching equipment to farms such as inter-cultivators, mechanical weeders, grain threshers, grass movers and milching machines, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

The NLDB will utilise lands belonging to its farms by using these new equipment. It is also hoped to bring growth to the country's animal husbandry sector and increase the income level of the NLDB, he said.

He said the NLDB hopes to grow high quality grass and fodder varieties at farms. The NLDB has already grown 1000 Kgs of imported grass seeds for the Maha season. Arrangements have also been made to grow another 3000 Kgs of imported grass in future.

The NLDB through this programme will provide grass to the farms and the farmers who have engaged in animal husbandry without any shortage, he said.

The NLDB will also provide 20 milching machines to dairy farms to enhance dairy production.

"These milching machines would facilitate the production of pure and quality nutritious milk by minimising the high production cost of milk production," the official said.
