The Organisation of Professionals Kandy (OPK) conducted the 19th AGM committing themselves to the theme "A challenging year for the organisation of professionals, Kandy" at Hotel Suisse, Kandy recently.

The chief guest on the occasion Vidya Jothi Dr. Ray Wijewardena, Chancellor, University of Moratuwa stimulated the audience by speaking on the role of the professional in a developing society. He explained how one could lead a non-dependent life in an inter-dependent global society. Citing practical examples of professional skills among ordinary folk, he emphasised the role that could be played by professionals in applying their knowledge and expertise to become self-reliant.

He said what is really necessary is the resolve to cultivate an unselfish commitment to serve the community and improve the lives of the less fortunate in society.

Senior Attorney-at-law, Ananda de Silva the outgoing President, OPK reminisced the period he led the organisation.

He said he was confident that the OPK would play a vital role in contributing to the improvement of Kandy and its environs. He was encouraged by the enthusiasm of some of his members who have offered their services free in the development effort of the city. He hoped that with the cooperation of the politicians, policy-makers and implementing authorities, the OPK could overcome the challenges and have a positive impact on the development of Kandy and improve the living conditions of its inhabitants.

L. R. Loyd Perera, the founder president OPK proposing the vote of thanks said that he was overjoyed to find that an organisation started as a small group among friends in the early 80s has now grown to a fully-fledged association with nearly 100 members committed to serve the environs in which they live to the best of their ability.

He made a sincere request to the Mayor and the OPK to restore the city to its pristine glory at the very earliest.
