by Sarath Malalasekera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing a massive racket on container cargo at the Colombo Port yesterday questioned at length a senior Binder attached to the Government Press, Colombo. The Government Press employee is alleged to have supplied special papers to prepare forged documents, forwarded to the Port authorities to clear the containers. Prior to this the CID took into custody five suspects, a senior Assistant Accountant, two Shroffs, a Wharf Clerk and a Clerk attached to the Ports Authority. The suspects, W. Joseph Nihal Silva, W. Edwin Samarasinghe, W. Liyanage Dudlison, G. Jebeneson Rasiah and H.P. Gunaratne were produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mohammed Macky and were remanded till March 5. The CID is looking for a leading freight forwarding agent who is alleged to be involved in the racket. The CID investigations reveal that the Ports Authority has been losing billions of rupees due to this organised racket. The suspects now in custody are alleged to have been involved in the racket after convincing several Ports Authority officers. |
