BARISAL, Bangladesh, Friday (Reuters) More than 60 people are missing, feared drowned, after a ferry sank in a river in southern Bangladesh three weeks after nearly 500 people were killed in a similar disaster, police said on Friday.

The ferry, M.L. Suraha, had about 100 people on board when it sank in the Baleswar river during a storm on Thursday night, said police superintendent Abdullah Al-Azad, said.

Nearly 40 passengers managed to reach the shore but the others were missing, feared drowned, he said.

"The M.L Suraha went down during a brief storm...around 40 of its nearly 100 passengers are were safe but the rest are missing," he said.

The ferry was heading from Charduani in the coastal district of Pirojepur to the southern industrial district of Khulna when it sank.

A search for the missing was underway, Al-Azad said.
