Hartal in Batti, Ampara

by Manjula Fernando

All schools, private banks and other private institutions in Batticaloa and Ampara towns were closed yesterday in support of a Hartal organised by a student organisation alleged to be backed by the LTTE.

The Hartal was organised to protest against the recent hand grenade attack on Notary Public Norton Sidambarampillai's residence, an alleged STF shooting incident which injured Thambalivil MV student Ranjan Mano and the delay in vacating school and other public buildings by the Army.

Tires had been burned in support of the hartal on certain roads and the police had removed them after being reported by civilians.

According to Police sources there had been no buses on roads. However despite the protest campaign the Bank of Ceylon branches and hospitals had functioned as usual.

Despite the situation an opening of a new divisional secretariat for Koraleipattu central at the YMMA building at Valachchenai had been held without any disruption. Several distinguished guests including the Home Affairs, Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Earl Gunasekera and Fisheries Deputy Minister Mohideen Abdul Cader had participated in the function.
