Youth excel at SMSCs rally At the fifth anniversary celebrations of the Southern Motor Sports Club held last Sunday, which commenced with the Cargills-Southern Members Day Motor Rally, a number of youngsters bred by the SMSC came out with flying colours, both in organising and taking part in the motor rally. This year's celebrations of the club included, the Members Day Motor Rally, the Annual General Meeting, a colourful evening with a dinner and, fun and games for children. The Cargills Food City was the main sponsor and the day's events added a lot of colour and excitement, piercing the salubrious atmosphere of the Matara. The Cargills-Southern Members Day Rally was participated by 30 well-known motor sportsmen and women of the south, which turned out to be a highly competitive and memorable event. The 83 km route was plotted by Dakshina Amarasinghe, a youngster of 18 years, who is probably the youngest plotter in the country. The first car was flagged off at 3.02 p.m. by the Member of the Parliament for Matara, Luxman Yapa Abeywardena, and it took around 2 1/2 hours to complete the route. Monty Uluwita (driver) and Wasantha Jayasena (navigator) were adjudged the winners of the rally, with all the first 10 overall winners falling within a range of 15 debits points. A large number of youngsters who had taken to motors sports recently, did extremely well, providing proof of SMSCs commitment to popularise motor sports in the South of the country. It was a joy to watch two youngsters, Tharaka Jayasekera (16 years) and Chandika Amarasinghe (12 years) who navigated their father-drivers, winning the 2nd and 5th places, respectively. Champika Devanarayana, who was navigated by her husband, won the 'Best Lady Driver' award. The awards distribution ceremony was held at Pearl Cliff Hotel, Browns Hill, Matara. |
